Future Trends in Food Science and Technology

Advances in agricultural productivity and efforts to promote sustainable development are crucial to ensuring food security and earning foreign currency via exports. A safe food supply based on sound agricultural practices is also critical to ensuring healthy populace. The domestic agricultural industry is currently facing hardships resulting from aging rural populations and difficulties in increasing agricultural productivity. This has prompted many enterprises in the food industry to seek raw materials and establish production bases overseas. Southeast Asia is rich in natural resources and its proximity to Taiwan provides a favorable environment for overseas agricultural cooperation. The Council of Agriculture of the Executive Yuan has previously sought to promote cooperation with Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, and other countries through the establishment of the Southbound Agricultural Cooperation Program and the New Southbound Policy.

This cooperation have also helped to promote academic exchanges. Since 2014, the Department of Food Science of Fu Jen Catholic University has been cooperating with Assumption University (Thailand), Soegijapranata Catholic University (Indonesia), and Saigon Technology University (Vietnam). A number of events have been organized, including the bi-annual International Conference on Sustainable Global Agriculture and Food (ICSAF): the 1st one was held in Thailand (ICSAF 2014), the 2nd one in Indonesia (ICSAF 2016), and the 3rd one in Vietnam (ICSAF 2018).

This year, the 4th ICSAF (ICSAF 2020) will be held in Taiwan and hosted by the Department of Food Science of Fu Jen Catholic University (November 6th to 7th, 2020). This international conference will bring together representatives from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Taiwan to promote academic exchanges and economic developments. Also this conference will help to lay the groundwork for upcoming events in Thailand (2022), Indonesia (2024), Vietnam (2026), and again in Taiwan (2028).
