2019 National Invention and Creation Gold Medal Award

University chair professor Bing-Huei Chen of Fu Jen Catholic University Department of Food Science and Health Ever Bio-Tech Co., Ltd. have jointly developed the “Pharmaceutical Compositions of Carotenoid”, also named as “Lycopene Chylomicron”. The carotenoid extracted from tomatoes is made into a botanical drug that can treat male prostate gland hypertrophy. It has passed the three-phase clinical trial certification from Taiwan and the US, and has written a historical page of new drug development in Taiwan. Expectedly this product will become the first botanical drug for treatment of patients with prostate gland hypertrophy worldwide. Because of this contribution, Prof. Chen has won the National Invention and Creation Gold Medal Award in the area of Biotechnology, Medicine and Pharmacology, sponsored by Ministry of Economics, Taiwan in 2019.

Father’s Beer

In 2020, the Human Ecology College of Fu Jen Catholic University launched “Father’s Beer”, a beer brand that pays tribute to the name of the university. Development of this beer drew inspiration from the well-loved “red quinoa ale” developed by Prof. Jung-Feng Hsieh through the academia-industry research (AIR) product launch in 2019. Prof. Hsieh teaches at the Department of Food Science and serves as director of Center for Innovation and Development in Human Science. In March this year, the dean (Prof. Chih-Ching Teng) of the College decided to combine innovation and entrepreneurship education by forming a taskforce to conduct research and design, positioning, and promotional activities for development of a new beer brand. The trademark for Father’s Beer was designed by the College of Art. In addition to creating a healthy and tasty beverage, the Human Ecology College places high emphasis on social responsibility. Father’s Beer is made with a native species of red quinoa grown in Taitung and longan honey produced by farmers in Hsinchu and Miaoli. The Human Ecology College have high hopes of continuing to develop innovative products that promote and support Taiwan’s agricultural sector.
